Well we are a little behind on September’s Porch fo the Month thanks to a little tropical disturbance called Dorian! But alas, we are thrilled to announce that Abel Harding is the owner of this month’s featured porch!

Check out the photos and a little background on Abel’s inspiration for his porch!

Thank you to Debra Adloff for another outstanding job on the photos! Check out her work at DebraHeuskin.Com.

1. What is your favorite thing about having a front porch?

It’s impossible to sit on your front porch and not get to know your neighbors. I’m not just talking about the folks next door, but the people down the block and around the corner. I love to sit outside (when the weather is bearable) and read or write. Invariably, someone’s going to walk by and strike up a conversation. It’s the best part about living in a true neighborhood.

2. Was there a special inspiration in the decorating of your porch?

I wish I could say yes, but I have no decorating abilities whatsoever. I just knew I wanted bright colors that accentuated the house, which is where the yellow and red came in, and I had to have a porch swing.

3. How long have you lived in Springfield?

I’ve been here over eight years now. The neighborhood has changed dramatically during that time, particularly along Main Street.

4. What is the best part of living in Springfield?

I’ve been in Jacksonville for well over 20 years and Springfield is the first place that felt like home. You know your neighbors and they become friends.

5. What advice would you give to folks thinking about moving to Springfield?

It’s important to come in with eyes wide open. Not everyone has neatly manicured lawns. You’re probably going to see people that don’t look like you, act like you or think like you. But, if you want a neighborhood that is a diverse and welcoming community, Springfield is the best place in Jacksonville.
