Congratulations to Michael David McCall and Joshua Wilkerson for being recognized as July’s Porch of the Month! They have created a truly patriotic and welcoming design. Check out their creation below.
Big shout out and thanks to Renee Parenteau Photography for partnering with us an doing an amazing job with the photos.
What is your favorite thing about having a front porch?
A front porch facilitates a sense of community and encourages conversations. We enjoy sitting in our rockers with a cup of coffee in the morning or a cold drink in the evening spending time with one another, our dog LyndaCarter, and speaking with our neighbors as they pass by.
Was there a special inspiration in the decorating of your porch?
There are quite a few small touches that are inspired by our love of family and home. We both come from small sleepy southern towns where rocking chairs are staples of any front porch that remind us to slow down and to take a moment for ourselves. Many of the plants were gifted to us by family, friends, and neighbors. Each of those plants have a name and remind us of a specific person or event.
There’s also a collection of vintage items (ex: old steamer trunk circa late 1800s, galvanized watering can from the mid 1900s, little red wagon from the late 1900s, etc.) that bring back nostalgic childhood memories with grandparents, parents, and siblings.
Because of our love for the holidays there is typically a variety of seasonal custom-made wreaths, handmade flags, little treasures, and seasonal flowers displayed. Currently there is a patriotic theme to celebrate our great country’s independence and the many freedoms we are so lucky to enjoy because of those who came before us! 🇺🇸 We love the holidays so much that we coordinated the purchase and installation of a flagpole for Klutho Park that will double this coming Christmas as a 25’ Christmas tree for the neighborhood to enjoy.
How long have you lived in Springfield?
What is the best part of living in Springfield?
Without question it’s the people! Everyone waves and speaks as they come by, they are passionate about our neighborhood, and they make Springfield feel as though it’s always been our home.
What advice would you give to folks thinking about moving to Springfield?
Anyone interested in moving to Springfield should join the Springfield community Facebook page to see what our calendar looks like. It’s surprising to many to see not only the amount of events we host but also the variety of activities we constantly have going on! I encourage any potentially new neighbor to choose one or two events, attend those, and see for themselves the level of positive energy and hospitality within Springfield. We attended two separate events within months of one another and though our plan was to buy within San Marco or Riverside we bought a home in Springfield within months of our first visit here and we have loved every moment since.
