Porch of the Month – September 2018

Meet Kharis and Shirelle Quaintance, the proud owners of this spectacular home and the featured porch of the month for September! They are a beautiful couple and have created a true relaxing oasis right in the heart of Springfield.

Historic Neighborhood, historic home, front porch, southern living, Springfield, Jacksonville, Florida

What is your favorite thing about having a front porch?

We like being outside without being completely outsideWe have shelter from the heat while still enjoying the fresh air, watching nature and enjoying the view of our yard. (We planted every flower, plant, shrub and tree you see.) Relaxing and having a cup of coffee, glass of lemonade or wine, there’s just nothing better and no better place! And if we want a little more privacy we don’t just have a porch, our home has a balcony as well. We split time between the two.

Was there a special inspiration in the decorating of your porch?

I wanted the porch to have furniture that could take the elements but wasn’t your typical porch fare. The picket fence table is a favorite piece. Also, I use the seasons as inspiration. Before our month is up it will be different than the pictures. Hydrangea garland and wreaths will be packed away in exchange for fall colors of changing leaves, mums and pumpkins.

How long have you lived in Springfield?

Our home  was purchased in 1998 and renovated in 2000. The porch was a big part of the renovation with changes to bring it back to how it looked historically with the columns and spindles.  Kharis added the tongue and groove ceilings as a final touch of elegance.

What is the best part of living in Springfield?

The location and its proximity to everything. You can’t beat, in a city as large as Jacksonville, being within 20 minutes of just about everywhere.  We take a taxi to downtown concerts and events. We also love the feeling of community. People actually know their neighbors and not just their faces. Not to mention all the events such as Porch Fest and First Fridays. Then there are the groups like garden and book club.

What advice would you give to folks thinking about moving to Springfield?

Find a Springfield realtor because they know all the great homes intricately as well as all the community activities. They can give you history not just on their fact sheets but from seeing the homes over the years. Next, plan to get involved because the excitement is contagious. And lastly, find a comfy chair for your porch!
